Aug. 08, 1954 - He plans to sail round the world.: 21 year old Wolfgang Kraker von Schwarzenfeld sailed into Newhaven during the weekend on a raft with sails in which he plans to sail round the world. The raft is home-made a platform lashed to two cylinder shaped floats. Under the floats are storage tanks holding 110 gallons of fresh water. Wolfgang navigates and sleeps on one float. The other is his galley and storeroom. The sails are his one extravagance, he got the best German sailmaker he could find to make them. He calls his raft the “Sea Arrow”

With an average diameter of less than 12 miles, irregularly shaped Phobos has a very weak gravitational field making it relatively easy for the command module to come very close without being drawn all the way to its surface. The goal is to come close enough to permit space-suited astrogeologists equipped with personal manned maneuvering units (MMUS) to act as mini-spaceships themselves and descend to the surface. Aug. 08, 1953 - Professor Piccard's” Bathysphere 'Is Launched In Italy: Professor Piccard's” bathysphere”, the vessel in which the professor hopes to explore the dephs of the Tyrrhenean Sea, and set up a record dive of 13,000-ft., was launched at Castellamare di Stabia, Italy. The vessel consists of two main parts - a cigar-shaped structure of watertight compartments which will house the special liquid which will be used for surfacing, and a lower part which is the actual sphere from which observations will be made

Cotylorhynchus - Cotylorhynchus was a large mammalian reptile (Synapside, Pelycosaur) living herbivorous from early Permian to mid-Permian (299 to 265 million years). They were the largest terrestrial animals of their time, measuring 6 metres long and weighing two tons. Giant, 20-foot-long and one-ton synapsids of the genus Cotylorhynchus forage in an Early Permian swamp 275 million years ago in what is today North America. Also in this image on the lower left is a 3-foot long lepospondyl amphibian of the genus Diplocaulus. Vegetation includes ferns and horsetails in the foreground and on the horizon is a forest of ginkgos. Cotylorhynchus is the largest known non-mammalian synapsid and was the largest land animal of its time. Cotylorhynchus - Cotylorhynchus was a large mammalian reptile (Synapside, Pelycosaur) living herbivorous from early Permian to mid-Permian (299 to 265 million years). They were the largest terrestrial animals of their time, measuring 6 metres long and weighing two tons. Giant, 20-foot-long and one-ton synapsids of the genus Cotylorhynchus forage in an Early Permian swamp 275 million years ago in what is today North America. Also in this image on the lower left is a 3-foot long lepospondyl amphibian of the genus Diplocaulus. Vegetation includes ferns and horsetails in the foreground and on the horizon is a forest of ginkgos. Cotylorhynchus is the largest known non-mammalian synapsid and was the largest land animal of its time. The summit of Mt. Etna is 10991 feet (3350 m) above sea level. Four small craters are located at the summit. Several cinder cones (generally circular - shaped features) are visible at various locations around the flanks of the volcano. The different colored terrain on the flanks of the volcano indicate lava flows that have occurred at different times and have produced a variety of surface roughness on the slopes of the volcano. One of the reasons that Mt. Etna is closely monitored is to provide advance warning of a major eruption to the surrounding towns and villages that are found around the base of the volcano.
