Paul Nash (1889-1946) The Pine, 1926 Watercolour and pencil Height 54.4 x Width 38 cm Purchased from the artist 1928 TWCMS : F3442
Nash considered groves of trees to be cathedrals of nature, expressing the grandeur and spiritual quality of landscape. This is one of several tree studies he sketched on beige paper in the 1920s. In this picture, he teamed the paper colour with blue sky and reddish leaves, describing trunks and branches with brushed lines.
