Kenwood House, Hampstead Heath, London, early 17th century, houses the Iveagh Bequest art gallery; English Heritage. Internationally renowned collection of paintings bequeathed to the nation 1927 by Edward Cecil Guinness, 1st Earl of Iveagh. Art masterpieces by Vermeer, Rembrant, Turner, Reynolds and Gainsborough, portraits of Elizabethan and Stuart celebrities include Portrait of an Artist by Rembrandt, The Guitar Player by Vermeer and Mary, Countess Howe by Gainsborough. Events include live summer lakeside concerts. Landscape painted by John Wootton in 1755, remodelled in 1793-6 and completed by the 3rd Earl, largely to Humphry Repton's Designs. William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield, commissioned Robert Adam to remodel the house, 1764-1779. Adam added the library (one of his most famous interiors) to balance the orangery, and added the Ionic portico at the entrance. Charles Dickens used to walk here with friends.
