The Great Fire of London, c.1666-1700 (oil on canvas)

Painting of the Great Fire of London in 1666, showing a wide view of the city of London from the vantage point of Essex Stairs, to the west of Inner Temple Gardens - the Southwark bank of the Thames and London Bridge are just visible on the right. The image shows the painting before conservation treatment in 2013-2014, which revealed that the moon had been a later addition to the painting, and that it had in fact originally shown the fire raging during the daytime. A number of the figures and boats in the foreground had also been changed at some point by over-painting.
