Deriving from the private archives of Amiral Philippe de Gaulle, a senior French naval officer, politician and only son of General Charles de Gaulle, the de Gaulle Archives is a digital library documenting the private and political life of the Former President of the French Republic.

Charles de Gaulle (1890 - 1970)

An emblematic Figure of the twentieth century, the man who conducted the France Libre, refused the Armistice with Nazi Germany in 1940, created the Fifth Republic and resigned from his responsibility of President. This archive contains pictures of his childhood, his time as a Saint-Cyr student, a bridegroom, a prisoner in Lithuania, a captain, an attentive father and a relaxed man in his house in La Boisserie.

Changing the fate of France in World War II

De Gaulle was the most senior French military officer to reject the June 1940 armistice with Nazi Germany right from the outset. When his superior, Marshal Philippe Pétain, gave a radio address to convince the French people to give in to a German takeover, de Gaulle responded by giving a famous radio address the next day, broadcast by the BBC on 18 June 1940, exhorting the French people to resist Nazi Germany.
