The Secret Life of Scent
Renowned perfumier Mandy Aftel, founder and creator of Aftelier Perfumes, licensed the image of a sixteenth century engraving from the Bridgeman archive for the cover artwork of her latest book and accompanying Fragrant Companion Kit, Fragrant: The Secret Life of Scent.
Influence from the Past
Aftel’s Fragrant Companion Kit contains the scents featured within the book (such as cinnamon, jasmine, and frankincense). To complement the product, the engraving Aftel chose for her cover artwork depicts cinnamon harvesting on the Moluccan Islands of Indonesia. These islands are often referred to as the Spice Islands due to the expansive growth of many well-known spices, one of which being cinnamon. The original etching was created around 1575 as an illustration for French explorer, André Thévet’s Universal Cosmology.
Natural Aromas
Mandy Aftel prides herself on using natural components to create Aftelier Perfumes’ many perfumes, teas, and hair and skin elixirs. The companion kit contains examples of these natural essences, allowing the reader to “smell along” while following the accounts and histories of the featured aromas.
