Mash-up Mania!

The Regency era has been turned on its head by a new crop of mash-up novels from Quirk Books, Random House and Ulysses Press among others. Bridgeman is delighted to have licensed images for the book covers and we are excited to see where this trend leads!

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters published by Quirk Books

Quirk was first on the scene with it's Pride and Prejudice adaptation, written by Seth Grahame-Smith. The novel quickly became a bestseller and remains on the New York Times Bestseller list 26 weeks later. An heirloom edition will be printed in time for the holidays. For the cover artwork, Maria B. Fox, in a portrait by Sir William Beechey was turned into the undead heroine, complete with rotting flesh and piercing red eyes.

The recently released, Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters has occupied a seat on the New York Times Bestseller list for the two weeks since its release. Written by Ben H. Winters, the cover image was inspired by a color litho of a performace of Nelson's Enchanted, by W. & D. Downey from 1897. The cover artist, Lars Leetaru, painted the couple in the Downey's original into the tentacled Colonel Brandon with the object of his affection.

Jane Bites Back  - A Jane Austen Inspired Vampire Novel by Michael Thomas Ford published by Random House

Due to be released in December 2009, Jane Bites Back picks up 200 years after Austen's death. The undead Austen tries to get a manuscript she finished before turning into a vampire published, all the while juggling her real identity, a dark man from her past, and two modern suitors.

A retouched version of the Beechey's portrait of Maria B. Fox is the modern Jane, complete with fangs.

Vampire Darcy's Desire - A Pride and Prejudice Adaptation published by Ulysses Press

In this Austen adaptation, Mr. Darcy has fallen victim to his family's 200-year curse at the hands of the demon, George Wickham. His fate as a half-human/half-vampire definitely puts a damper on his desire to marry and he decides to live out his life alone rather than inflict the horrors on a wife. Alas, this is not to be, and when he meets Elizabeth they are drawn to each other despite the dark forces at work against them.

The cover artwork for  Vampire Darcy's Desire, is a bloodied painting by Marcus Stone entitled, A Stolen Kiss

Bridgeman loves seeing traditional imagery used in a unique way. We wonder how far the mash-up trend will go. In these trying times, we all need a little escape. May we suggest?

Anna Karenina and Arachnids?

Brideshead Revisited by the Birds?

Age of Innocence and Space Invaders?
