Art of the North of England

Bridgeman is delighted to represent Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums

" Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums holds outstanding collections of art including iconic works by LS Lowry, apocalyptic visions by 19th century artist John Martin and dramatic seascapes by Charles Napier Hemy.

By working with Bridgeman, we hope to make our collections accessible online to an even larger audience."

Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums is an organisation that runs several of the major museums around the Tyne and Wear area. Jewels in this North Eastern crown include Shipley Art Gallery and Laing Art Gallery, the latter being a result of a 1901 bequest by Alexander Laing, a wealthy wine and spirit merchant who made his fortune in Newcastle. The collection contains many views of the region throughout the ages, including a wonderful view of Sunderland’s dockside by the inimitable painter of the industrial north, L.S. Lowry.

 Laing Art Gallery

Laing Art Gallery is home to an impressive collection of art and sculpture. Their important collection of watercolours traces the development of the technique in Britain from the 18th to 20th century and contemporary atworks include paintings by Stanley Spencer and sculpture by Henry Moore. Highlights include paintings by Joshua Reynolds, J.M.W. Turner and the Pre-Raphaelites.

Laus Veneris, c.1873-75, whose Latin title translates to "the praise of Venus or love,"is the Pre-Raphaelite masterpiece inspired by Swinburne's poem.

Burne-Jones's painting conveys a mood of sadness and sensuality, particularly in the languid gesture of the love-sick queen, her splendid flame coloured robes contrasting with a sad and pale expression. Four maidens sit by her side with open scrolls of music, singing praises of love to cheer her up. Through the open window five knights seem to pause and listen, intruigued by the scene.

Shipley Art Gallery

Shipley Art Gallery boasts one of the country’s most comprehensive collections of contemporary craft and design.

Their collection, built up over the past 27 years by the Tyne and Wear Museums, ranges from 19th century British landscape painting of the surrounding countryside to 20th century views of industrial Northern cities, as depicted by Derek Hedgecock.

William C. Irving's painting, Blaydon Races captures the spirit of the traditional Blaydon Races and takes pride of place at the gallery.
