In a move that has angered many fishermen, the government of New South Wales will introduce a General Anglers Licence effective March 23, 2001, which will force all recreational anglers in New South Wales to buy a licence to fish in fresh or salt water. Fees collected from the licences will be put into trusts to improve recreational fishing by buying out some commercial fishing, creating recreational fishing areas, protecting and restoring fish habitats and stocking from fish hatcheries. Anglers can buy licences from three days for A$5 ($2.45) up to three years at a cost of A$70.
