Lieutenant-General Raymond A. Wheeler, Deputy Supreme Allied Commander South East Asia, and a brigadier director of transportation, walking along the pier at Kalewa, April 1945. Photograph by M/Sgt William L Widmayer, SEAC Photo Unit (US), World War Two, Far East (1941-1945), 1945. The ship yard was for the construction of river barges and boats used on the Chindwin River. Barges were constructed from either local lumber or from prefabricated sections brought in from Great Britain, America and Canada. Construction work was done by Indian troops and Burmese and Indian civilians under the supervision of British officers and men. One of 29 British official photographs.
