Image description

Creator: David Watkin Waters A starboard bow view of a bell stemmed harbour junk under sail at Singapore. The vessel is three masted and her fore and main lug sails are set. The mizzen sail is stowed. She is deeply laden with cargo stacked above the hold and she has an accommodation shelter over her forecastle. Her anchor is suspended over the starboard bow. The photographer was at Singapore on four occasions during 1937 and 1938: 9 April to 1 May 1937, 13 January to 26 February 1938, 9 March to 23 March 1938 and 17 September to 30 September 1938. Negative number P34001 is another view of this vessel. In Waters' photograph album number 2 this image is described as "Zoosen at Singapore". The meaning of Zoosen has not been traced and it is possible that Zoosen is the name of the vessel. Waters Collection: HNC0410.
