The Peshawar Vale Hunt, 1896.
Photograph, India, 1896.
The Hunt was formed by the Army in 1870 out of the regimental and private packs stationed around Peshawar. Jackal were hunted instead of the fox, and were very plentiful. The pack marched to Kabul during the 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880), and then back to Peshawar. The maintaining of a pack was extremely difficult, due to the climate and frequent postings of officers.
From an album of 107 photographs compiled by Col Joseph Hume Balfour, 13th Lancers, Indian Army, 1887 circa-1912.
