'Scene in Trones Wood as it appears today’, 2 September 1917. Photograph, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1917. Trones Wood, located to the south east of Longueval, was the scene of fierce fighting during the opening phase of the Somme offensive. The attack on the wood began on 8 July 1916, but it was not until 14-15 July that the British 14th and 18th Divisions succeeded in taking it after a protracted fight. The accompanying captions states that: ‘Even as late as April 1917 this wood was a scene of grim desolation'. From a collection of official and aerial photographs of the Western Front.
