The execution by the sword, a penalty applied to the recidivists, takes place in the court of the prison, in the presence of the governor of criminal justice and his officers; each convict, with his eyes stripes and the garment rejected back on the shoulder, is kneeled, butchers crouched at his side to hold his body, after decapitation, head is placed in a bucket to be washed and exposed, and the body is enclosed in a bag of straw to be delivered to the gentlemen who have asked them to practice the use of the sword. Engraving to illustrate the voyage to Japan, in 1863-1864, by Aime Humbert, minister of the Swiss Confederation, in “Le tour du monde, nouveau journal des voyages”” published under the direction of Edouard Charton, Hachette, Paris, 1867.
