Halden September 1959 interiors from the nuclear reactor in Halden a few days before the opening. The reactor in Halden was built in the period 1955 to 1958 by the then Institute of Atomic Energy (now the Department of Energy Technology, IFE). The reactor was built as an experimental reactor, with sufficient effect to also be used as a prototype steam manufacturer for the industry. Cooling of the reactor and moderation of neutrons occurs with 14 tonnes of heavy water. This type of reactors is called a cooking water reactor. When the reactor is ongoing, the heavy safety doors are closed, while the processes are monitored via remote view screens in the control room.
