Switzerland Cast Romanese Message, 1955 (b/w photo)

The coffin with the corpse of Aurel Setu is brought from the embassy to the airport to transport Setu to Romania with the sympathy of many diplomats. Among those waiting to be seen are Emmerich Stoffel, Romanian ambassador, wearing glasses and a light coat, and to his right the Chinese envoy Feng Hsuan. In February 1955, armed Romanians in exile occupied the Romanian embassy in Bern in a spectacular action. Their aim is to hand over the embassy archives to a Western secret service and to capture the embassy personnel in order to exchange them for political prisoners in Romania. The final failed robbery, in which the chauffeur Aurel Setu dies, provokes the protest of Romania, which leads to a press campaign against Switzerland. The latter reacted with stricter entry conditions for Romanians.
