The ruins of Whitby Abbey stand date back to 1078. They stand on or near the original monastery built by Hilda, great niece of Edwin, King of Northumbria. The Abbey decayed after the closing of the monasteries in the 16th century. Newcastle artist John Storey has chosen an evening view, which adds to the drama of the scene. He was known for his watercolours of buildings, many of them painted on a large scale.
