The Priory Church at Tynemouth was built about 1100, and enlarged around 120 years later. It was ruined in the 16th century after Henry VIII ordered the Dissolution of the Monasteries. In the 19th century, artists became increasingly interested in trying to recreate scenes of life in Britain long ago. Newcastle artist John Storey has shown the Church as he thought it might have looked, with the monks walking in procession alongside the church. The fading light of evening adds to the romantic mystery of the view.
