Fireworks light up Taiwan's frontier island of Quemoy, or Kinmen, in a joint fireworks display with the city of Xiamen, across the Taiwan straits in mainland China, on February 26, 2002. The fireworks to celebrate the Lantern Festival, the last day of Chinese New Year, are a stark contrast to the daily artillery barrages between Quemoy and the mainland from 1958-1979, which ended as relations between the two political rivals warmed.
