Not Dated A framed colour drawing on grey paper, showing: a half-length portrait in profile of Thomas Law (1756-1834), writer on finance and taxation who, after a spell in India, left for the USA in 1793; here he became an entrepreneur, friend and advisor to George Washington, and was regarded by Americans as a wealthy and eccentric Englishman; in 1796, he married Elizabeth Parke Custis (1776-1831), the granddaughter (from a previous marriage) of George Washington's wife, Martha, but they separated in 1804 and divorced in 1811; it appears Thomas Law never returned to Britain (dying in Washington DC, 1834), and this pastel drawing was therefore made during one of Sharples's periods in the USA, 1794-1801 or 1809-1811, most probably the former from the apparent age of the sitter
