Image description

The artist Muhammad Amir of Karraya (a part of Calcutta) was known for his almost photo-realistic paintings of subjects including houses, horses, servants, carriages and grooms of British households in India. One of his patrons is the European businessman Thomas Holroyd, whose presence inside the palanquin is mostly shielded from view. Muhammad Amir is one of the few known artists of the Company school, as most artists’ names were not recorded and so remained anonymous.
