Pastor Rev. Kevin Kostelnik hits the door to enter the new Cathedral of Our  Lady of The Angels, September 2, 2002 in Los Angeles. When Cardinal Roger  Mahony dedicates his massive, nearly $200 million new cathedral in downtown  Los Angeles Monday, the monolithic concrete structure will be asked to do  far more than just host Sunday Mass in America's largest Catholic  Archdiocese. It is hoped that the modernist, box-shaped Cathedral of Our  Lady of the Angels, will offer both a spiritual home to Los Angeles' growing  Catholic population and bring a sense of community and warmth to a downtown  dominated by cold skyscrapers and empty sidewalks.
