Mexican banker Carlos Cabal Peniche, who was extradited to Mexico from Australia, speaks during a press conference with his legal team October 3, 2001 to explain the status of his fifteen separate accusations of fraud for around US $700 million during his tenure as chief of Banca Cremi Union. Peniche has been acquitted of 13 of the fifteen charges although state prosecutors have appealed many of those decisions. Peniche maintains his innocence, although his case has attracted huge criticism for the failures of the prosecution and as an example of how money can buy freedom in Mexico's judicial system.
