A commando (R) presents a jaguar to General Peter Pace, Commander-in-Chief of the Southern Command forces of the United States, during training exercises at Brazil's Jungle Warfare Center outside of the steamy jungle capital of Manaus. The school is in charge of training the troops that defend Brazil's extensive Amazon borders, after being created in 1964 when the country entered two decades of iron-fisted military rule. In a sign that times have changed, the Brazilian school, modeled after the U.S. Army's reviled School of the Americas, which human rights activists say spawned alleged terrorists, drug trafficers and dictators, could now save the vast expanse of the Amazon from such criminals.
