In this picture, fishwives prepare to sell fish on the Fish Quay at North Shields after the men have brought the boats in. Victor Noble Rainbird has used thin washes of watercolour over white paper to reproduce the glitter of reflections from the wet ground. Greyish tones suggest the damp atmosphere. Rainbird was a North Shields artist, and painted many studies of his home town.
