A test building on San Clemente Island is hit by a Tomahawk cruise missile, launched from the British attack submarine HMS Splendid, during a test launch off the coast of California November 18, 1998. The missile's 1,000-pound explosive warhead successfully hit the target in the first launch of the U.S.-made Tomahawk from a British sub. The United States and Britain on Sunday launched waves of air strikes against targets across Afghanistan, and President George W. Bush said the country's radical Islamic rulers were about to "pay a price" for supporting terrorism. U.S. officials said the attacks included cruise missile strikes launched from British submarines.
