Image description: This painting is one of a series looking at cathedrals which Robin Philipson made after visiting Rouen Cathedral in France. Philipson's paintings are noted for their energy and rich, jewel-like colour. This view is full of light, colour and warmth, with the intense glow of the stained-glass windows contrasting with the white lines of the cathedral architecture. Born in Cumbria, Philipson moved to Scotland with his family when he was fourteen. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art, where he joined the teaching staff in 1947 and taught there until his retirement in 1982.
