Portrait of Algernon Seymour, Lord Hertford (later 7th Duke of Somerset) with Colonel Tomkins Wardour, Colonel Browne, Lord Beauchamp, Frances, Lady Hertford, Lady Elizabeth Seymour, and Miss Herbert, 1732 (oil on canvas)
On extreme right Colonel Tomkins Wardour in scarlet, seated at a dice board, three-quarters left. His opponent Algernon, Lord Hertford seated opposite, facing left front, in blue and gold. Colonel Browne stands leaning on his left elbow on Lord Hertford's chair back; in front of him stands Lord Beauchamp, a child in long clothes, before two crimson drums. His mother Frances, Lady Hertford, is seated full face, centre, in white, holding the child's right hand. Next to her stands her daughter, Lady Elizabeth Seymour (who became First Duchess of Northumberland), in grey. She is cutting out a painting of a rose. By her a dark-blue-covered table on which lie strips of paper, paints and brushes; at the other side of the table sits Miss Herbert, who married a Mr. Prigot in Holland (sic 1930 picture catalogue). She is painting a small landscape. Behind Lord Hertford and Colonel Browne a door with a pediment, with two sculptured figures. Behind Miss Herbert the fireplace over which hangs a landscape in the manner of Edema (sic 1930 picture catalogue). Columns each side of the fireplace, pilasters in the walls, with gilded cornices. On right a marble topped table with gilded swags of flowers and hoof feet. Signed lower left: C (in compendium) Philips pinxit 1732
