Image description

Slave factories or compounds maintained by traders from four European nations on the Gulf of Guinea in what is now Nigeria, from A New and general collection of voyages / Thomas Astley. London, 1746, vol. 3, p. 64. Reynaud Des Marchais, Chevalier des Marchais was a French cartographer, navigator, and captain of a slave ship who travelled extensively along the coast of West Africa 1704-27, under service to the King of France. In 1727 he mapped the Kingdom of Whydah ruled by King Haffon and centered in Savi, before its capture by Dahomey.
