Former Sandinista guerrilla commander Eden Pastora Gomez, who was known as Commander Zero, maintains his hunger strike in front of the Nicaragua's Supreme Electoral Council September 14. Pastora is conducting his protest, which began August 22, in an effort to overturn a ruling by the Council barring him from running for president based on questions about his citizenship. [In prohibiting his candidacy on the Democratic Action Party ticket, the Electoral Council had ruled that Pastora effectively renounced his allegiance to Nicaragua when he became a Costa Rican citizen in 1977 for strategic reasons at the request of the Sandinista leadership.]
