YAACOV VANUNU ATTACHES MEZUZAH INSIDE A CAR IN JERUSALEM, 1998-06-30 (photo)

Yaacov Vanunu, who owns an automobile parts store, attaches a small Mezuzah to the inside panel of a car door June 30. A Mezuzah is a Jewish parchment scroll rolled up and inserted in a case which is attached to doorposts in rooms of Jewish buildings. It contains two passages written in square Hebrew characters, traditionally 22 lines long. Religious Jews will touch the Mezuzah every time they pass through a door. Vanunu sells each Mezuzah for 20 Shekels ($5.55) and claims to have sold out all that he produced in the first week of business. Vanunu also hopes that by drivers installing a Mezuzah in their car, it will cut down on the high number of traffic fatalities on Israeli roads. JWH
