Wilhelm Eduard Weber, German physicist, c 1860s. Portrait of Wilhelm Eduard Weber, (1804-1891) who established the precise measurement of electrical quantities. He studied at the University of Halle, Germany, from 1822-1826, going on to teach there before his appointment in 1831as chair of physics at Gottingen University. Here he collaborated with Johann Gauss (1777-1855) to investigate the precision measurement of magnetic quantities, developing sensitive magnetometers and other magnetic instruments. He also carried out research into electrodynamics and the electrical structure of matter. The SI (international standard) unit of magnetic flux, the 'Weber' is named after him. ©SSPL/Science Museum
