UNITED STATES AIRFORCE PLANE BELIEVED TO BE CARRYING JERRI NIELSEN, 1999-10-16 (photo)

An aircraft from the United States Airforce belived to be carrying Jerri Nielsen arrives at Christchurch airport October 16. Tight security and a screen of vehicles around the plane prevented any sight of Nielsen, a physician based at America's scientific base at the South Pole who found a lump in her breast in mid-June, in the middle of the Antarctic winter. No plane could reach her then but medical supplies were dropped by parachute in July. The mission to evacuate Nielsen has been held up for the past three days because of extreme cold at the South Pole. TAN
