Saint Margaret Clitherow (1556–86) is an English saint and martyr of the Roman Catholic Church. She is sometimes called "the Pearl of York". Recusant; Richard Rowlands (c1550–1640), Anglo-Dutch antiquary, real name was Verstegan. Roman Catholic convert; moved to Antwerp and became publisher, engraver, intelligencer and smuggler of books and people; anti-reformation; being crushed to death was standard punishment for refusal to plead; after the execution Elizabeth I wrote in horror at the treatment
