Image description

Red eyed tree frog, Agalychnis callidrias curious treefrog in rainforest Costa Rica, Central America. Climate change, responsible for the extinction of thousands of tropical amphibians. Costa Rica is home to a wide variety of amphibians, with almost 200 species that are part of a unique fauna, 20 of which are endemic and some are in danger of extinction. It is estimated that dozens of frog species have already become extinct and hundreds could be in the process of disappearing. They are threatened on several fronts, succumbing to a deadly cocktail of factors including pollution, climate change, and habitat loss and degradation. A third of the approximately 6,000 species of frogs, toads and salamanders that exist are threatened, a figure greater than that of any other group of animals. Rising global temperatures increase cloudiness in tropical mountains, leading to cooler days and warmer nights, conditions that favor the development of the "chytrid" fungus, responsible for a deadly disease that affects amphibians.
