This blacksmith’s anvil was built up in several sections and hammered together while still molten. On a splayed pedestal, the back of the tool is flat while the front comprises a central pilaster between two arches, giving the cathedral-like impression. A zigzag border pattern frames a fleur-de-lis flanked by the date 1787 and the initials “VD”. The square hole pierced in the table is for the cutter, while the holes at each end of the pedestal are for inserting lifting bars.
