A distant view of Ciudad Roddrigo taken from the Oak-Wood, near thee Village of Espelja, with a troop of Spanish Guerilhas [sic].
Coloured aquatint by Charles Turner after Major Thomas St Clair, published by Turner, Colnaghi and Boydell 10 October 1812. From A Series of Views of the Principal Occurrences of the Campaigns in Spain and Portugal, 1812-1815.
One of a cadre of British officers selected to train and command the Portuguese Army in the Peninsula, St. Clair led a regiment of Cacadores (Portuguese riflemen). Note also the troop of Spanish guerillas in the foreground.
