Image description

‘A Chief of the Tribe of “Jekranee Beloochees”’, 1839. Coloured aquatint by Henry de Daubrawa, after Captain Thomas Postans, 15th Bombay Native Infantry, 1839 circa. Engraved by J Harris, published by Rudolph Ackerman, as No 1 of ‘R Ackerman’s Foreign Military Gallery’, 1843. At the beginning of the 1st Afghan War (1838-1842) the Army of the Indus entered Afghanistan through the Bolan Pass, a passage 60 miles long and 5,880 feet tall at its highest point. It took the army two weeks to pass through it. During this period they were constantly fired upon by Baluchi tribesmen. This Baluchi chieftain leads a band of mounted fighters on a mountain path. He wears a turban and striped pantaloons, and carries a sword, musket and shield.
