No. 19 wireless set in a Sherman tank, 1943. Photograph by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), World War Two, North Africa, 1943. Trooper Tommy Elkins of the 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) uses a wireless set in the compartment of his Sherman tank. The No. 19 set was often installed in tanks, universal carriers and wheeled vehicles. The set had a range of about 10 miles on speech and about 20 miles on Morse Code format using a simple 8-foot vertical antenna located on the top of the vehicle. From an album containing 216 photographs compiled by Major W H J Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters).
