The previously secluded St Barnabas' Square, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1932-34 (b/w photo)

On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "(Mid-winter) The previously secluded S. Barnabas' Square coming into view. The two big houses on the West side of the Square would have a combined width of round about 50 feet, whereas, out at the roadway, the distance between the gable of 15 Seneschal Lane, (marked over print,) and the Customs Hose wall, in the roadway from Fort St., to the house on the opposite side, (no footpaths,) was a bare 12 feet. The whole of the Square from the road-way, into the big houses on the West, was cobble-paved, the largest remaining patch in the town. This seen in later prints, (and earlier) No.3 only roof seen, tucked in at back. No 2 [ ] Space from North gable of 15 Seneschal Lane to corner of Custom House 11 yards - paced 17.11.33. Width of roadway from Custom House wall to Joe Sharp's house (with no pavement) 12 feet at most."
