The Bisson brothers were pioneering French photographers who around 1860 had established a studio in Chamonix; 1860 was the year that Savoie became a part of France and August-Rosalie Bisson, who was serving as imperial photographer at the time, accompanied Napoleon III and his imperatrice Eugenie on their visit to the region and published a series of photographs of the royal entourage's exploits in the Alps afterwards; Les Echelles is a commune in the Savoie department of the Rhones-Alpes region of South-Eastern France;
