Image title
A necessary doctrine and erudition for any Christian man, sette furth by the kynges majestie'. In 1543 an authoritative doctrinal formulary for Henry VIII's Church, known as the King's Book, was published. Henry was indeed closely involved in its production, as this late draft annotated in his hand shows. Here he rewrites the book's attack on the papacy, inserting a claim that the Pope, to maintain his authority, 'dothe wrest scripture ... contrary bothe to the trew memyry off the same and the auncyent doctors interpretations', and so wrongs not only the English Church but all Christendom. The 1543 Act for the Advancement of True Religion enforced the book's doctrine, which was more robustly conservative than the 1537 Bishops' Book, as authoritative, and it remained so until Henry's death
