Sita and Rama lie sleeping on a bed of grass, while Laksmana and Sumantra talk of Rama's virtues, and the horses graze. All around lie the sleeping townspeople who have followed them in their grief. On waking up, Rama instructs the charioteer to lay a false trail, as if the chariot had turned back towards Ayodhya instead of proceeding towardSitae forest. When the chariot returns, he gets into it along with Sita and Laksmana and they proceed towards the forest, leaving the townspeople behind. Grief-stricken to have lost Rama, they return to their homes in the city. At the bottom, the four drive off along the bank of the river Tamasa.
