McEune, Robert Ernest
drawing, pencil and watercolour on card, entitled Girl Reading, by the artist Robert Ernest McEune
The picture on the wall behind the woman appears to show a shipwreck. This may be a comment on the letter the woman holds, suggesting that its content has wrecked the woman's hopes. Tiny dots of colour make up her face, which is painted in great detail. The woman's dress is a style worn around 1800-10. However her hairstyle is in the fashions of the late-19th century, when the picture was painted. Imagined scenes from long ago were popular at this time. Robert McEune was a Gateshead artist.
