Image description

British (English) School. OIl painting on canvas, Possibly Alice Strickland, Lady Blount (1648-1680), English School, 1660s. Previously called Jane Moseley, Lady Strickland (d. 1671). A half-length portrait against dark ground, in brown dress, wearing large ear-drops. On back of painting: 'This portrait is Jane Moseley daughter and co-heiress of John Moseley of Williskelf of the county of York.Esq.and relict of Sir Christopher Dawney of Cowick in the county of York Knight, she married in 1646 to Sir Thomas Strickland, Knight and also Banneret, son and heir of Sir Robert Strickland of Thornton Briggs and Sizergh Knight, and his wife Margaret Aliford, daughter and co-heirs of Sir William Alford of Bylton in Cleveland, by whome she had several sons and daughters who died young, but was survived by a daughter Allise who married Sir Walter Kirkham Blunt of Toddington and Mauly in the county of Worcester and left no issue. Also a daughter Jane who married John Middleton of Stockeld in the county of York and left no issue'. Apparently the same sitter as in the three-quarter-length in the manner of Huysmans, but – from her hairstyle –painted a little earlier, and so like that of Mrs Middleton as almost to be her twin.
