Oil painting on panel, Vanitas Still Life of Musical Instruments, in the manner of Pieter Gerritsz. van Roestraeten (Haarlem c.1630 – London 1700), late 18th to 19th century. A fiddle and bow, a flute, a globe, an open and a closed book, and a music-book, all rest on a gold-fringed red velvet tablecloth. A piece of paper bears the inscription HAEC / MEA / VOLUP / TAS, and in smaller letters; FINIS. The page of an open book is inscribed; Beschrybinghe / van / BREDA. Inscribed Josiah Pattinson on reverse and may be the artist or the owner. There are books in the Scotney collection also inscribed in the 18th century: ‘Josiah Patenson Ashford Kent'.
