Video description

Aphrodisias was a small Hellenistic and Roman city in the ancient precinct of Caria, on the southwestern coast of Asia Minor. The Imperial Hall, located back to back on the eastern side of the Theatre Baths, was built probably due to the growing needs of the City to provide its growing population with civic structures, a need that was not fully met by the adjacent Tetrastoon. This basilica-like structure was delineated from the north by the Tetrastoon and from the west by the Baths. This large hall had columns carved out of local blue-grey marble. Fragments of two lavishly ornamented pilasters framing a large rectangular niche, where an Imperial statue was situated, were found there. This is where a door opened in the Imperial Hall's back wall, connecting it with the Tetrastoon. Shops of various sizes and storerooms were established at the sides of the Imperial Halls' aisles. The Imperial Hall was built most likely after a series of earthquakes Aphrodisias suffered from in the 350s-360s AD.
