The gods and demons are locked in battle. Sumāli the rāká¹£asa, Rāvaṇa's maternal grandfather, wishing to avenge his ignominious defeat earlier by Viṣṇu and the gods (see folio 17r), starts creating havoc amongst the ranks of the gods. Vasu, one of the gods, takes the initiative in fighting Sumāli and a terrific duel between the two ensues on the lower right. Sumāli is defeated after Vasu smashes him with his mace, here a sword, and Vasu triumphs.
