Contemporary stylized representation with citizens and soldiers dancing around a freedom tree, a pole decorated with revolutionary symbols, while on the ground the symbols of the old rule are broken. The followers of the old world mocked the symbolism of the trees of liberty, it was characteristically a tree without roots and a (freedom) has without head. From 1790 onwards, there were increasing demands in Switzerland for reforms, for the abolition of subject relationships, for freedom and equality of rights. 200 years ago, Swiss revolutionaries and French troops paved the way for a new state, the Helvetic Republic. The revolution in Basel on 20 January 1798 marked the beginning of the revolution in Switzerland.
