Image description

SOUTH KOREAN FORMER COMFORT WOMEN KIM EUN-RYE AND HWANG KEUM-JOO WEEP AT AN ANTI-JAPAN PROTEST IN SEOUL. Kim Eun-rye (R) and Hwang Keum-joo (2nd-R) who were so-called "comfort women" or sex slaves forced to provide sex to Japanese soldiers during World War II weep at a weekly anti-Japan protest, held every Wednesday, near the Japanese embassy in Seoul April 4, 2001. The South Korean government on Tuesday expressed "deep regret" that the Japanese government had authorised a textbook written by nationalist historians for use in Japan which has drawn criticism from across Asia for whitewashing Japanese actions during World War Two and said it would take further measures in protest.
